DID YOU KNOW? Water skiing was invented in 1922, when Ralph Samuelson used a pair of boards as skis and a clothesline as a tow rope on Lake Pepin, the largest lake on the Mississippi River (in between Minnesota and Wisconsin.) Samuelson went on to teach the sport for 15 years. Today, America alone is home to 11 million water skiers and more than 900 official annual competitions. If Pepin sounds familiar, that’s probably because it’s also the birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder. “Little House in the Big Woods,” the first book in Wilder’s best-selling series, starts with her father visiting the lake. Today, water skiing is a popular summer sport across Wisconsin (and its 15,000+ lakes!) And every July, Wisconsin Rapids hosts the Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Championships, the largest and longest-running tournament of its kind in the world! |
