Our loons are starting to migrate and are heading north. The winter storm we are experiencing at this time in Wisconsin and Minnesota are dangerous for these loons who are migrating through.
Loons are heavy bone birds who are flying at their maximum weight. Any added weight, such as ice coating their body and wings, causes them to drop like missiles out of the sky and crash land where they do not belong.
Loons also mistake wet and dark surfaces such as blacktop roads and parking lots for open water. Once they land on these hard surfaces, they are stranded and possibly injured.
Please be on a lookout for loons in roads, parking lots, fields, or small ponds etc.
GROUNDED LOONS NEED RESCUE! DO NOT PUT LOONS IN THE WATER, ESPECIALLY SMALL PONDS THEY MAY HAVE INTERNAL INJURIES OR OTHER INJURIES. CALL FOR HELP!
