The Forest County Land Conservation/Land Information Department is excited to announce that we purchased a new Global Positioning System (GPS). This is a step forward in modernizing our land records in the county. Myself and the County Surveyor, Jamie Anderson, will be able to use the survey grade GPS to locate, update, and maintain the Public Land Survey System monuments in Forest County. Survey monuments, often small metal or concrete markers embedded in the ground, are crucial reference points for land boundaries, construction projects, and legal land descriptions. Over time, some of these markers have become difficult to locate due to environmental changes, development, or natural wear. With this new GPS equipment, we’ll be able to pinpoint existing monuments with sub-centimeter accuracy. It will allow us to efficiently verify the condition of each marker, update records, and replace those that have become damaged or lost. With the coordinates gathered from the new GPS, the county’s Geographic Information System (GIS) will be able to get corrected and updated, as many of the digital parcel lines in the county are not highly accurate and can be up to 300 feet off. The GPS we purchased is a Carlson BRx7. The Carlson BRx7 is a high-performance GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver designed for professional surveying, construction, GIS, and mapping applications. It’s part of Carlson Software’s advanced lineup of field data collection tools and is well-suited for both small-scale and large-scale projects requiring high precision and durability. It is particularly well-suited for wooded and rugged environments—which is a big plus for places like Forest County, where dense tree cover can typically pose challenges for GPS-based surveying. The new GPS was purchased with Wisconsin Land Information Program grant funds, which are state funds received by the Forest County Land Conservation/Land Information Department on a yearly basis.
