On September 17, 2026 the Forest County Association of Lakes (FCAL) and the Forest County
Land and Water Department continued its mission to promote education of inland
waterbodies, environs, and fisherees by providing an educational field trip for environmental
science students in the three Forest County high schools: Laona, Wabeno, and Crandon.
The students were divided into groups to meet with specialists in different environmental area.
They rotated through seven different stations. These stations included; a pontoon boat ride to
identify Eurasian Milfoil and Zebra Mussels, a drone demonstration to show how it is used by
the county for a variety of reasons, a ride on the Potawatomi’s shocking boat to better
understand our fish population, the Game Warden speaking about boating, ATV/UTV and
snowmobiling rules, an investigation of various organisms that inhabit the wetlands, DNR fish
biologists explaining their jobs, and a speaker about geology.
By making our students aware of nature around us, we hope to encourage them to become
good stewards of our world.
