On October 2nd, the Forest County Association of Lakes (FCAL) hosted Environmental Day. Roughly 55 high school science students from Crandon, Laona, and Wabeno were able to get hands-on training opportunities both on and off the water. Lee Lamers (member of FCAL) and Kayla Littleton (Forest County Land Conservation/Land Information Director) were able to round up a group of volunteers and different partners of the county to help accomplish Environmental Day. The students rotated through 9 different stations that were able to show them what the natural resources field consists of. The 9 different stations included Forest County Land Conservation, Forest County Land Information, Forest County Potawatomi Water Resources Program, Lumberjack RC&D, Wild Rivers Invasive Species Coalition (WRISC), Wisconsin DNR, Forest and Florence County game warden, RT Krueger with Northern Lakes Services, and an aquatic plant identification station. The Forest County Land Conservation department was able to show students how we use the departments drone for a variety of different tasks, and the Forest County Land Information department was able to show different surveying equipment and some different skills that are useful for surveying. When asking the students which station was their favorite most of them said the fish shocking boat. This station consisted of the Forest County Potawatomi’s Water Resources Program and let the students go out on the water in the shocking boat and net a variety of different fish. There is such a wide range of different things that go on in the natural resources field and with Environmental Day we are able to show these students some of the things that go on in the natural resources field locally. Thank you students for being open minded and bringing great questions! We also want to thank all the volunteers and county partners for their time, without them this wouldn’t be possible.
