On Thursday, September 26th, high school students from Forest County schools gathered at the City Beach in Crandon for the annual Forest County Association of Lakes (FCAL) – Fall Environmental Day. Students spent a few hours in the morning learning about various environmental related topics. The students that attended are currently taking a high school environmental science or biology class at Laona, Wabeno, or Crandon schools. There were 8 different stations for students to rotate through. All 8 stations had an environmental topic or activity. Topics included terrestrial and aquatic invasive species, land surveying techniques, aquatic macroinvertebrates, a pontoon ride to look at invasive species in Lake Metonga, a presentation on honey bees, the Forest County Potawatomi had one of their Natural Resource Biologist’s there with their shocking boat, and the Land Conservation/Land Information department was able to do show the capabilities of their drone. A cool moment from the morning was when our drone was able to use our H20T sensor to zoom in on the shocking boat out in the water and see two of the students with walleyes they had netted. Here is the picture of Laona High students Cooper Albrecht with a 26” walleye and Canton Chrisman with a 24” walleye taken from the drone. Thank you to all the presenters for showing up and making this event possible!
